Environmental Challenge
In today's world we are becoming increasingly aware that we have to make changes to the way we live, work and do business in order to sustain the planet we live on. All businesses are reviewing the way they maintain their property, use and conserve resources, handle waste materials and provide a safe and healthy workplace for employees. BOMA Newfoundland and Labrador would like to recognize the efforts of our member companies and thus have introduced the BOMA Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Challenge.
Two Ways to 'Take the Challenge'
- Participation in the BOMA Go Green/BOMA Go Green Plus Program
Go Green is a unique national environmental recognition and certification program for commercial buildings in Canada, designed, developed and administered by the Building Owners and Managers Association of Canada (BOMA) in partnership with BOMA local associations across the country. It is designed to assist building owners in resource conservation, recognize environmental leadership in Canada, and have a significant impact on the commercial real estate industry's approach to environmental issues.
It is an industry “best practices” model, with a requirement to meet the ten minimum best practice criteria, in five key environmental areas; Resource Consumption, Waste reduction & Recycling, Building Materials, Interior Environment and Tenant Awareness.
See our Go Green page for more information. - Participation in the Recognition of Environmental Stewardship Program
This program was designed to recognize those organizations that have put initiatives in place, which limit their environmental impact on the world in which they live and work. We are looking to acknowledge both Manager and Supplier member companies that have developed their environmental philosophies to include issues that not only affect their facilities, but also how they conduct their business. Their environmental awareness transcends the requirement to be profitable and acknowledges a need to be more responsible.
Watch for applications early in 2008 or call the BOMA office at (709) 722-8786 for more information.

Created to take a stand against the greatest threat our planet has ever faced, Earth Hour uses the simple action of turning off the lights for one hour to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming.
This simple act in Sydney, Australia in 2007 has captured the hearts and minds of people all over the world. As a result, millions of people in some six continents and over 20 Canadian cities will participate in Earth Hour 2008.
Be one of the millions!
Our Goal is to encourage as many people as possible to participate by turning off their lights and making the city as dark as possible for one hour. Everyone is encouraged to participate - residents and businesses alike. We have asked the media and The City of St John’s to help us promote this historic show of support for our planet.
Show your commitment to fight climate change, and see the difference we can make when we all work together.
Let’s do it together!
Most commercial buildings shut down all but essential lighting after hours and on weekends. Let us be extra vigilant on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at 8pm to make sure all lights that may have been overlooked will be turned off.
